Dog Semen Bank

Director: Prof. Gaia Cecilia Luvoni

Cryopreserved semen, widely used in cattle breeding, is more and more used for artificial insemination in small animals and for the preservation of male germplasm of high genetic value individuals.

Cryopreservation allows the international movement of genetic material when male and female are in different countries.

Spermatozoa can be preserved for short-term periods at chilling temperature (+5°C) and for long-term periods by freezing in liquid nitrogen (-196°C).

These preservation protocols include a dilution of semen samples with specific extenders aimed at maintaining spermatozoa viability and functional integrity during the exposure to non-physiological conditions.

SEMEN BANK SERVICES

Chilling, freezing and storage of semen samples.

Export of chilled or frozen semen samples to European or third countries.

Import and storage of chilled or frozen semen samples from European or third countries.

PROCEDURES

Semen sample of the donor dog (microchip identification is mandatory) will be evaluated for quality parameters before the preservation protocols.
A certification of the semen sample will be provided.
see page semen quality

In the same day of semen collection, the donor dog will be clinically examined to certify the health status (export of semen samples to some countries requires specific health examinations and blood tests of the donor dog).
